I can't find an ACJ serial number prefix in my book. I have a 586-1 which had changes in 1986. The serial number Prefix of mine is AWU and the entire number indicates it was shipped in 1987. The S&W Model 586, (The .357 Distinguished Combat Magnum), started with serial number AAA0003 in June of 1980. It was produced from 1980 to 1999. It is an "L" frame gun, and a good one. The "Missouri Dept. of Conservation" model (250 made) was produced in 1987 with a case AND a belt buckle. Smith & Wesson used overlapping serial number ranges until the 1950's and 1960's, when serial numbers started to include letters. It wasn't until the 1980's that serial numbers became unique across the entire company. On the frame just under the barrel, exposed when the cylinder is opened it reads AOM5824 and MOD 586 below that. (it ^could^ be ADM5824 but really looks more like a squarish O). 2.
