May 16, 2023 · Previously, the Leningrad Codex was the oldest, extant manuscript of the Hebrew Bible. CBS News said that the Codex Sassoon is now considered older than the Leningrad Codex. As mentioned earlier, carbon dating led to this determination of the text being slightly older than the Leningrad Codex (older by a century). Codex Sassoon, dating from circa 900 CE, is comprised of the twenty-four books of the Hebrew Bible supplied with punctuation, vowels, cantillation marks, and an extensive collection of text-critical notes known as the Masorah. Only one other full Hebrew Bible dating from this early period survived into the modern era: the Aleppo Codex.
